                 (this session will be repeated from 2:30 - 4:30)

Searching for a resource that will excite students about health careers? This session will acquaint participants with an innovative program designed to familiarize upper middle and high school level students to the variety of health careers in the health services pathway. Sample student lessons and teaching guides will be used to orient attendees to Phase I and Phase II components of the American Careers Health Careers Planner.
Note: All participants will receive materials valued at $195 free of charge.

This keynote presentation will explore issues facing Health Science Technology (HST) programs and the impact these will have on our future healthcare workforce.  The importance of building a culture of HST teachers will also be addressed

Representatives from education and the healthcare industry will discuss their views on issues surfacing in the opening session and will react to questions and comments from symposium participants.

Anatomy of a Teaching Tool – Searching for a resource that will excite students about health careers? Lab Results through the Curriculum Revitalization Initiative – The Curriculum Revitalization Initiative (CRI) enhances Health Science Technology programs by providing teacher-tested, electronic-based instructional materials for teachers.  Each lesson is aligned with the Illinois Goals, Standards and Performance Descriptors, saving teachers the time-consuming task of creating their own.  This hands-on session will introduce participants to the CRI Lesson Library, provide a sample format for individual HST lessons and provide details on how to build a course outline that aligns with the Illinois Learning Standards

8:00 – 10:00    Under the Microscope: Innovative Teaching Strategies in HST Programs
This session will highlight three HST programs in Illinois that feature innovative and exemplary practices that can be replicated in any school setting.  Topics will include how to reinforce mathematics and science content in your HST classes, using Problem-based Learning as a teaching strategy to engage students and the benefits to HST teachers to becoming “highly qualified” through a science teaching endorsement.

10:15 – 12:00   Diagnosing  Professional Development Needs
Reinforcing academic content, teacher certification issues, special populations, workplace skills, career pathways…the list goes on.  How do we make sense of it all?   This highly interactive session will offer participants an opportunity to shape future professional development venues that are unique to HST teachers and programs.  Input from symposium attendees will also help shape HST teacher preparation programs in Illinois.  This is a chance to provide feedback on your professional development needs!
